It took me no less than a a full album to get my hearing accustomed, even more with classical music. A good track to test was Aulos from Vladimir Cauchemar — Orchestre lamoureux version, beginning pianissimo and rising steadily to a massive fortissimo.

As before, stay with the balanced output, always. The sound stage is wider, by far, and you can definitely hear massive improvements on the lower end of the chart. Lows are shyer than before and I had to push the volume a bit higher, compared to the M5S. Highs : neutral and pleasant. Details and micro-details flow uninterrupted and I was surprised with subtle sensations I could not hear on the FiiO M6 before. Mids : flat maybe too much. Lows : accurate and tight. At equal volume, it feels like the sound is thinner, especially around Hz.

Noise : the Shanling M2X is absolutely dead silent in any conditions.

You get the same sound signature — dry, precise, subtle — without the awkward design previously shown by the M5S. A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife.

He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing ly boring numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist. I think the m5s has the best sound of all of them. I really like the smaller size of the player vs the m5s which is tank. I have an M2S, the output power with the M2X is lower, how does the sound compare between the two?? Great review! I like the Shanling M2x, Can you sum up the difference between the m2x and fiio M9, thanks.

The screen size is the same but for me, that made a huge difference in term of design. The player is made of a CNC milled aluminium case, smoothly polished, anodized and tinted, sandwiched between two plates of curved glass. This time, Shanling shipped us the M2X with a neat leatherette case, but hat is only for reviewers. It is for sale separately though, and you should get one. There is no gap or flaws on any part of the player, the M2X is a true jewel in this regard.

Even if the M2X embeds a touchscreen, Shanling kept the multi-function scroll-wheel. The scroll wheel is made of the same metal and colour than the main body, again a seamless design. A small but nice difference is how those buttons slightly stick out from the player. This makes the player a little more easy to control in blind mode, a good upgrade. You also have the micro-SD port, sealed with a rubber mat to avoid dust and particle penetration.

Only one port though, the iBasso DX still remains one of the few player with a dual port in this price range now. Going from the M5S to the Shanling M2X is very much like going from a family wagon to a sports coupe : so much more enjoyable. Screen size is the same but fitted on a smaller, proper case, it makes a big difference. Everything fits perfectly under the palm of your hand, and the smooth curves on each side outshine the screen presence.

The screen retains the same 3.

As often, Shanling goes deep into the stationary Hi-Fi, the company portfolio has many such listings and successful models.

Almost 5 years ago Shanling has decided to conquer the portable world and released rather functional and well sounding M3. Then we have seen M2 — a good player for the lovers of dark presentation - not too successful M5 flagship and at last, the player that has shown the vector of development in company — M1. At this time engineers have understood that the market demands a stylish device. The players that have come afterwards M2s and M3shave proved the idea successful.

And at last, with the M0 release Shanling have shown the longing to move towards touch screens. The price is well thought over with the player costing USDhowever this segment is very crowded. The appearance of the player is the area in which the company feels more self-assured. The compact body is made of aluminum and has attractive curves. Front and back sides are covered with 2. Although it is not too practical and makes the player more fragile yes, buy the case immediatelyas well as attracts fingerprints.

There are three colors to choose from: black, red and metal grey. The operation is convenient, the left part has three playback buttons that can be easily found blindly. Here we also see the microSD slot with plastic cover. The top panel is empty, the right one has a volume wheel that also has functionality of on-off and blocking button. This time the company has used a quality encoder that moves with precise clicks.

The outputs are in the lower part — two audio outputs and USB-C. The latter is modern and universal. The player can be used in complex scenarios for ex.

Total charging time is 2 hours, 40 minutes. The player works approximately 7 hours with balanced connection and slightly less than 10 hours single ended. The result is slightly below average for balance and quite normal for unbalanced. The sub-bass reproduction on the M2X has a higher level of agility with an impactful rumble. The mid-bass on the M2S has slightly more body than the M2X. The M2X has a tighter presentation. The bass decay on the M2X is quicker and the agility creates a more engaging presentation.

The bass texture on the M2X is rendered in a smoother manner. Each bass note on the M2X is articulated with a higher level of precision and there is greater definition. The midrange on the M2X is more detailed than the M2S and it has higher transparency level. Vocals are expressed with greater clarity on the M2X. The lower midrange on both has similar body but the M2X has the edge with a clearer male vocals expression.

The upper midrange on the M2X has greater emphasis and the extra boost results in a more intimate female vocals presentation. There is a stronger midrange display from the M2X. For the treble section, the M2X has better extension than the M2S with higher level of details retrieval. The crisp on the M2X is more defined and there is additional sparkle.

The treble expression on the M2S has more body while the M2X has greater amount of air rendered with an open feeling at the top end. Lastly, for the soundstage, the M2X has a more natural expansion with greater width magnitude.

The depth of the M2S is more closed in. The R3 has more sub-bass quantity than the M2X and there is greater extension.

The sub-bass reproduction on the R3 provides an engaging rumble. The bass decay on the R3 is slightly quicker and it boasts a higher level of agility. The bass texture on the R3 is rendered in a smoother manner. The mid-bass on the R3 has slightly more body and the slam is delivered with extra punch.

Each bass note on the R3 is articulated with more authority and impact is brought out well. The midrange of the R3 is warmer than the M2X and there is a more bodied presentation. Vocals are expressed in a smoother manner on the R3.

There is higher transparency level on the M2X. The lower midrange on the R3 has more body than the M2X and there is a thicker male vocals expression. The upper midrange on the M2X has additional forwardness and there is a livelier female vocals performance. For the treble section, the M2X has greater extension and the expression is energetic. The player starts up fast. The UI is snappy and even the file scan can be done in the blink of the eye, all good points.

My main concern comes from the screen itself : the resolution is too low! To be blunt, the resolution is as bad as the case is nice. A great update is the advanced USB output compatibility. Big news, the Shanling M2X now supports Tidal streaming. No Spotify, Qobuz or Deezer yet, but I hope this will come soon. Once connected to your local hotspot, you can easily play music from every sources, to your DAP. I mostly used the Airplay function as my iPhone and iPad always hang around me.

The Shanling M2X is smaller than before, rated at mAh. After a few weeks, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the M2X behaved. Balanced mode? If battery life is one of your main concern, you should stick to single-ended. Good news. The deep sleep function works perfectly fine and if you just listen during your work commute, one charge could last one full week. Shanling was one of the first brands to add dual-way Bluetooth on its DAPs.

This mode allows the listener to connect a digital source to the player all wireless. Compared to DNLA and Airplay, this option trades quality due to the limited bandwidth for versatility : almost everything has Bluetooth now. My only real concern comes from the scroll-wheel which I ended up pressing, each time I brought it out of my pocket.

The Shanling M2X weighs g, so you lose 30g in the mix. The case adds up roughly 1cm overall, so not a big deal in my opinion. A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife.

I would like to thank Shanling for providing me with the M2X in exchange for my honest opinion.

No incentive was given for a favorable review. Shanling is a Chinese Hi-Fi company that is well known these days for making high quality portable audio products at an affordable price point. I have had a few products of them in for review now and have been very pleased with what I have experienced.

shanling m2x

I use it for training, commuting and any other time that I want great quality music with me while I do not have much more space available than the pockets of my jeans or a coat. Like the M0, the M2X came in a box with a white sleeve that included some basic information on it and images of the different color options available.

It looks like the M2X has three options, black, titanium and red, whereas the M0 had a couple more with purple and blue as extra options. Removing the sleeve revealed the same classic mat black box with a glossy Shanling logo on it and it looks very nice, so no reason to change that. Popping the lid also popped out the very bright red M2X player contrasting sharply against the black background.

Definitely a bit of a glamorous entrance there and although a strikingly beautiful color red, I am not sure if I have the right personality to carry it off. Included as well was a good quality USB-C cable and a very basic manual and warranty card.

shanling m2x

It is all very similar to the M0 and as I said in my review of that one, it is precisely what I would expect at this sort of price point. Also included for the purpose of this review was a matching red pleather case that will be offered as a separate item.

I have been a big fan of the design of the M0, which I thought was really well thought out and implemented. The M2X has the same sleek type of design with a few notable changes.

The screen is now a 3. I find this size very good for portable use and it feels perfect when I hold it in my hand either with the case or without. On the left side is the micro-SD card slot, which supports up to 2TB cards that is the only memory you will have no on-board memory.

On the same side the M2X also offers three physical buttons for playback control. On the bottom the USB port and 3. The build quality I find really good and the way I usually measure that is by how much I feel the need to use a case. Shanling of course sent along a case and it is very nice, fits snugly and does not impede use except for the fact that the hole for the balanced out is not big enough to accommodate the plugs from my balanced cables by Effect Audio and PlusSound, two of the more popular brands of aftermarket cables.

However, I have had no qualms about using the M2X without the case, which for instance is something I never liked doing with my AK The AK70 for some reason did not inspire the confidence I have with the M2X and that could simply be psychological, as the AK70 is very well built mine has the dents and scrapes to prove itbut I tend to attribute it to the way the M2X is designed.

Eve online serpentis ratting ship

The edges are nicely rounded, seams feel very smooth and it gives the impression of solidity. I still would not recommend dropping it from a roof or tossing it from a running start, but I feel it can take the type of light bumps that would occur with regular use and without babying it. It does look very nice though, so I would not be surprised if some people baby the M2X just to keep it in that pristine condition. I said with the M0 that I thought it was an award winning-level of industrial design, and the M2X is very similar.

It is too easily pushed and responds quickly, meaning that I often accidentally turn it on while, say, removing it from its case, or turn on the screen while it is in my pocket.
