Thread starter xunogil Start date Sep 1, Alright, so I had posted a little while ago trying to get some idea about a 4BT build but now I'm starting to wonder something else and since that thread kind of died I figured I'd start a new one.

So here is what I am wondering now: I'm still planing to do a diesel FJ40 build but now I am wondering what y'all think would be the better motor. The FJ would not be for extreme uses mostly daily driving, trips, camping with a little off roading but nothing requiring crazy amounts of torque and such but it would be nice to be able to tow a light something or other with it.

So I wan opinions but also backed stats on why you would prefer one over the other, things I have in mind would be fuel economy, ease of install 4bt needs a spring over conversion idk about the Mercedes but I would like to keep it somewhat stock looking so spring over conversion is a negative for the 4bt in my book. Anyways, I hope you have an idea of what I'm looking for so let the battle begin BDSeff1fitty FJ I'd message Luke at 4x4 labs.

IIRC the isnt divorcable. I was thinking about the OM because its the easiest to get model there are others like OM that might fit better but getting parts would be hard.

From what I've read the engines in the Ds are as bullet proof as a cummins 4bt, and there are some mercedes site that would all the parts I need. I've seen acouple of swaps into toyotas the engine mounts will be easy, Its just the divorced transfer that would be the biggets snag, I think a NP from a older dodge might work, but it would mean a real short drive shaft in the rear.

I assure you, you can tow anything you want as long as it does not rip the rear of the car off! Im not sure if the SD has a different frame setup in the rear, but on the chassis with a rear unibody and front sub frame, the towing weight limit was lbs with a lb tounge weight on the same engine.

There are ways around this which involve strengthening the chassis. I was able to circumnavigate the problem by removing the bumper on my and building a custom plate that I then welded a class three receiver I grabbed out of a junk yard onto the plate, then reinstalling the bumper. I then welded in some braces that went forward from the plate to the quasi-frame on either side of the spare tire well.

With this setup I was able to rent a standard uhaul tow dolly and tow another car miles with my 60hp A friend of mine did a similar thing on his SD, welding in reinforcement inside the trunk for his custom mounted class two receiver hitch. This was to tow his motorcycle on weekend excursions. Standard, all you will be able to find probably is class one hitches that bolt to the spare tire well and rear bumper.

In this instance, make sure the bumper has not done that interesting trick where the brackets that hold it to the bumper shocks have disappeared. If you have access to a wagon, thats a whole different story and you should be able to find a variety of hitches for it.Portal Search Calendar Help.

However, the issue is the size of the motor in a Suburban.

The Suburban weighs in at 5, lbs and has 3. Can the motor be tuned to put out more power? Because it's not the not the weight of the Suburban I'm concerned with but I wish to tow lbs on top of the Suburban's weight.

So I wish to be more confident of going ahead with this swap if the the motor can tow a GCVW of 13, lbs. It's asking alot but the MB did put out great diesels.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the issues of highway rpms on the two motors. The 4bt will require an over drive. A " body lift and 4" suspension lift should be plenty to clear pan with no mods to pan.
