So here is what I am wondering now: I'm still planing to do a diesel FJ40 build but now I am wondering what y'all think would be the better motor. The FJ would not be for extreme uses mostly daily driving, trips, camping with a little off roading but nothing requiring crazy amounts of torque and such but it would be nice to be able to tow a light something or other with it.
So I wan opinions but also backed stats on why you would prefer one over the other, things I have in mind would be fuel economy, ease of install 4bt needs a spring over conversion idk about the Mercedes but I would like to keep it somewhat stock looking so spring over conversion is a negative for the 4bt in my book. Anyways, I hope you have an idea of what I'm looking for so let the battle begin BDSeff1fitty FJ I'd message Luke at 4x4 labs.
I believe he does the Mercedes swap.
Merk Swap Yes he does have Diesel Mercedes adapters to accommodate many transmissions and many Diesel Mercedes engines.Remember Me? Articles Advanced Search. I'm going to replace me d35 with a d44 soon anyway if I stay with s and the on the transmission and my 31s I can get to 74mph at rpms with is good since the OM is a high reving diesel.
What you guys think? MF Steve! What kind of Jeep is this going in? Also, take in to consideration that Mercedes parts are not going to be cheap, and I doubt you're going to find anywhere else that is going to have a large selection of that stuff. I'd see if anyone has done it yet If I wanted to hear from an ass, I'd fu c kin fart. Originally Posted by john00TJ. IIRC the isnt divorcable. I was thinking about the OM because its the easiest to get model there are others like OM that might fit better but getting parts would be hard.
From what I've read the engines in the Ds are as bullet proof as a cummins 4bt, and there are some mercedes site that would all the parts I need. I've seen acouple of swaps into toyotas the engine mounts will be easy, Its just the divorced transfer that would be the biggets snag, I think a NP from a older dodge might work, but it would mean a real short drive shaft in the rear.

The lil Diesel spools way to slow so he had to run 's with 33's to get it up faster. Originally Posted by highlandercj What you guys think my math right? Math looks ok to me.

I'll see if I can call and find out what his name was and email addy if you would like.
I also came across a '94 XJ with a Renault diesel in it if you're interested. Originally Posted by JeepGeneral. Remember me. Thread Rating: 0 Vote s - 0 Average 1 2 3 4 5. Thread Modes. What's every one think? Your issue will be strength of the chassis, not so much what the engine can tow. I assure you, you can tow anything you want as long as it does not rip the rear of the car off! Im not sure if the SD has a different frame setup in the rear, but on the chassis with a rear unibody and front sub frame, the towing weight limit was lbs with a lb tounge weight on the same engine.
There are ways around this which involve strengthening the chassis. I was able to circumnavigate the problem by removing the bumper on my and building a custom plate that I then welded a class three receiver I grabbed out of a junk yard onto the plate, then reinstalling the bumper. I then welded in some braces that went forward from the plate to the quasi-frame on either side of the spare tire well.
With this setup I was able to rent a standard uhaul tow dolly and tow another car miles with my 60hp A friend of mine did a similar thing on his SD, welding in reinforcement inside the trunk for his custom mounted class two receiver hitch. This was to tow his motorcycle on weekend excursions. Standard, all you will be able to find probably is class one hitches that bolt to the spare tire well and rear bumper.
In this instance, make sure the bumper has not done that interesting trick where the brackets that hold it to the bumper shocks have disappeared. If you have access to a wagon, thats a whole different story and you should be able to find a variety of hitches for it.Portal Search Calendar Help.
Hello There, Guest! Login Register. Login Username: Password: Lost Password? Remember me. OM Turbo in 96' Chevy Sububrban? Thread Rating: 0 Vote s - 0 Average 1 2 3 4 5. Thread Modes. Hello all, My first post on this forum. I'm entertaining the ideal of a conversion of a OM turbo motor into a Suburban. I like the simplicity of the OM like any other mechanical diesel and know the dependability of the motor to be great hands down.
However, the issue is the size of the motor in a Suburban.Matlab missile
The Suburban weighs in at 5, lbs and has 3. Can the motor be tuned to put out more power? Because it's not the not the weight of the Suburban I'm concerned with but I wish to tow lbs on top of the Suburban's weight.
So I wish to be more confident of going ahead with this swap if the the motor can tow a GCVW of 13, lbs. It's asking alot but the MB did put out great diesels.

The stock OM But not fast. You have a gear that will certainly help it. Here some reading on low hp Mercedes diesels.
Do some searches here and you'll find threads about getting more power out it. The following are some good reads Getting out more fuel from the injection pump. Gota love Mercedes Diesels! The OM is much too small to move 13,lbs reliably unless you like driving 40mph with your foot to the floor. Hit a hill and it will end up crawling. Thanks for the info guys. For the sake of needing pulling power I probably won't do the swap.
However, I would like to use the motor in something because it's sitting in a D over in the 'junk" yard. Forgive how naive I am here but I am very mechanically inclined, just never done this. I see that a company makes adapter plates to Ford bellhousing.
My friend could possibly help me make one as he owns a machine shop, but they usually do stuff for Georgia Tech and Nasa no joke so this, while simple, is something they have never done without plans before hand etc. Let me know guys and please help school me.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the issues of highway rpms on the two motors. The 4bt will require an over drive. A " body lift and 4" suspension lift should be plenty to clear pan with no mods to pan.Coleman ct100u performance parts
This would leave you at about rpms at mph with a few rpms to spare. Since thats about as fast as you want to go in a 40 and i daily drive my 40 you'll be happier with her highway manners being that she's not "reved out" SM would be sweet on an om since you won't need overdrive unless you're in the midwest, florida or drive way too fast to be in a Last one I had i went with the isuzu 4bd1t to ranger OD to h Great MPG's but with 31" tires and 3.
I tow sailboats with my 40 and i'm worried that the om will be under powered for that compared to my current SBC. But i'm after MPGs and a sweet diesel sound.

I'd recommend them for leisure activity use, home, club, staff canteen etc. And those who take it that seriously can buy the more expensive cues for themselves. Great value, stress free if they get broken, keeps the staff happy. May be a bit light for some but that is personal preference.
